Spelt Advent Calendar 2021

It’s that time of year again and time for the Spelt advent calendar. This year we asked previous Spelt contributors to supply the advent poems. Enjoy!

Happy Christmas! To finish our festive advent calendar we have Tim Relf. Tim’s poem ‘The Burrowers’ appears in the current issue of the magazine. We’ve also been lucky enough to have Tim run workshops for us

Happy Christmas Eve! Behind the door today is the wonderful Alison Brackenbury. Alison’s poem ‘Writing to David Morley from the 132 Bus’ appears in the current issue of the magazine.

It’s Christmas Eve’s eve and in our Day Twenty Three Advent Calendar we have the wonderful Rachel Burns. Rachel’s poem ‘Parts of Flowers’ appears in the current issue of the magazine.

Day Twenty Two on the Spelt Advent Calendar and today our guest is Deborah Morgan. Deborah’s poem, ‘Self Portrait as Pavements’ is in the current issue of Spelt Magazine.

Day Twenty One, and on the solstice I give you our very own Steve Nash! As well as being Spelt’s co Ed and technical wizard, Steve is also a poet and creative writing teacher. Spelt would not be the glorious full colour thing of beauty without Steve. Thanks mate, for a fantastic year. We did it! 🎉

Day Twenty of the Spelt Advent Calendar and today we have Rachel Davies behind the door. Rachel’s poem ‘Fen Music’ came second in the inaugural Spelt Poetry competition in 2021.

Day Nineteen and today’s advent treat is by Bob Beagrie. Bob’s poem ‘Re-Wilding’ appeared in issue one of the magazine

Day eighteen and behind the advent calendar door today is lovely Angela Readman. Angela’s poem ‘10.58am in November’ is featured in the current issue of Spelt Magazine.

Who’s behind the door on Day Seventeen of the Spelt Advent Calendar? It’s Claire Cox! Claire’s poem ‘Distant Healing’ appears in the current issue, issue three of Spelt Magazine.

Day Sixteen of the Spelt Advent Calendar and today’s poet is Sarah Mnatzaganian. Sarah’s poem ‘Somerset Soundtrack’ won first place in the inaugural Spelt Poetry competition, and her poem appears in issue three, the current issue.

Day Fifteen on the Spelt Advent Calendar and behind the door today is the wonderful Pippa Little. Pippa’s poem, ‘Echo of an Ancient World’ appears in the current issue, issue three of Spelt Magazine.

Day Fourteen already! And today behind the door is Claire Booker. Claire’s poem ‘The lightness of Words’ appeared in issue one of the magazine.

Day Thirteen of the Spelt Advent Calendar and behind the door today is Maggie Mackay . Maggie’s poem Dúnn appeared in issue one of the magazine.

Day Twelve of the Spelt Advent Calendar and behind the door today is Sharon Black. Sharon’s poem ‘Les Finials’ is in the current issue, issue three of Spelt Magazine.

Day Eleven of the Spelt Advent Calendar, and today we have Suzy Aspell behind the door. Sue’s poem ‘Inside a Blackbird’s Heart’ featured in the current issue, issue three of the magazine.

Day Ten of the Spelt Advent Calendar and it’s Martin Malone behind the door. Martin’s poem ‘Fathom’ appeared in issue two of the magazine.

Day Nine of the Spelt Advent Calendar and today it is Thea Smiley’s turn behind the door. Thea’s poem ‘Chopping Kindling in the Dark’ featured in Issue 2 of the magazine.

Day Eight of the Spelt Advent Calendar, and today we have Matt Nicholson (@MattPoetHull ) behind the door. Matt’s poem ‘This Holderness’ appeared in issue one of Spelt Magazine.

Day Seven of the Spelt Advent Calendar and today it is Alison Lock behind the door. Alison’s creative non fiction piece, ‘When Rain Heals’ featured in issue one of the magazine.

Day Six if the Spelt Advent Calendar and it’s Carole Bromley. Carole’s poem ‘Foss Walk’ appeared in issue one of the magazine. Carole is a York based poet. She is the Stanza rep and does poetry surgeries for the Poetry Society.

Day Five of the Spelt Advent Calendar and today we have Sarah Wimbush. Sarah’s poem ‘Walking Girl’ appeared in issue two of Spelt Magazine. Sarah is a Leeds poet who hails from Doncaster.

Day Four of the Spelt advent calendar and today we have a short poem from Rob Miles . Rob’s poem ‘Undertakings’ appeared in issue two of Spelt Magazine. Rob Miles is from Devon and he lives in West Yorkshire. Hi spoetry has appeared widely in magazines and anthologies, and he has won several competitions including the Resurgence International Ecopoetry, the Philip larkin and Poets and Players prizes.

Day Three of the Spelt advent calendar and today we have Clint Wastling. Clint’s poem ‘Riding the Riding’ appeared in Issue One of Spelt magazine. Clint’s poetry collection Layers was published by Maytree Press in 2020.

Day Two of the Spelt Christmas Advent Calendar features Diana Cant . Diana won third place in the 2021 Spelt Poetry competition and her poem, ‘George’ is featured in the current edition of Spelt magazine.

For Day One we have Harry Gallagher. Harry’s poem ‘Old Hartley Nags’ appeared in issue one of the magazine. Harry’s books include Moulded From Ferrous (Black Light Engine Room 2020) and Northern Lights (Stairwell Books 2017). You can find out more about him here.
